Remote Graduate Students

Fall 2020 Enrollment & Deferrals

The key deadlines below are intended to help CoE graduate programs prepare for decision-making and communications related to graduate student remote enrollment and deferral of the Fall 2020 term. Please note that these deadlines apply to all CoE graduate programs (Ph.D., DEng, M.S., and M.Eng.).

Timeline for decision-making and communication with remote graduate students

Early to mid-July

Program communicates with admitted graduate students to explain fall term enrollment options and,in alignment with the announcements from President Schlissel and the College, to provide more general information about the College’s instructional plans for the 2020-21 academic year.

For international graduate students, it is important to acknowledge the continuing uncertainties about when interviews for F-1 student visas will resume. As of this date, no announcement has been made about when US consulates around the world will reopen. Consulates face a backlog of visa appointments to schedule, and students may have a longer wait than normal for an appointment. The opening of a consulate does not indicate when a student will be able to get an appointment and the visa stamp. A student is unlikely to get a visa in time for the fall term if consulates have not announced a re-open date by July 15 or have not reopened by July 31. For authoritative and up-to-date information, please see the International Center Updates Regarding COVID-19.

Friday, August 14

Programs should determine which graduate students will be studying remotely for the fall term and be ready to provide this information to central administrative offices that may need it for planning.

Friday, August 28

Deadline for program to notify the appropriate contact if an individual student has asked to defer enrollment to the 2021 Winter or Fall term.

  1. For Rackham Degree Programs, please notify Rackham Admissions (rackadmis@umich.edu).
  2. For M.Eng. Degree Programs, please notify Grad Engin M.Eng. Admissions (engin.pro.prgms@umich.edu).

Please note that deferral is the only option for students who reside in one of the countries that are comprehensively embargoed by the U.S. (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, the Crimea region of Ukraine, Venezuela) as export controls may preclude remote study. For questions, please contact the U-M Export Control Compliance Office at exportcontrols@umich.edu.

Tuesday, September 15

Please notify the appropriate admissions team of the anticipated arrival date of international students expected to arrive mid-term after beginning classes remotely in order to ensure immigration reporting and compliance.

  1. For Rackham Degree Programs, please notify Rackham Admissions.
  2. For M.Eng. Degree Programs, please notify Grad Engin M.Eng. Admissions.

These offices will update immigration documents accordingly with one of the following dates: September 24, October 26, November 16. Students may arrive up to 30 days in advance of this start date. The possibility of mid-term arrival could change as a result of changes in federal rules.

Please note that if a remotely-enrolled international student is not able to obtain a visa by the winter term, programs will need to seek a COVID exception for the student to continue in the program.

  1. For Rackham Degree Programs, please notify Rackham Admissions.
  2. For M.Eng. Degree Programs, please notify Grad Engin M.Eng. Admissions.
