Prepare to work fully remotely

Staff and Faculty Members:

I know many of you have already been working remotely but please read the following to make sure you have the most up-to-date information.

First, thank you to each and every one of you for working diligently to fulfill our research, educational and service missions during these difficult times. The University has now begun to move towards restricting access to U-M buildings. We are asking now that you prepare for that change immediately.

To prepare for restricted building access, each staff and faculty member should:

  • Verify you have in your possession an active, unexpired M-Card for exterior doors, and keys to access interior working spaces.
  • In consultation with your supervisor, assemble all materials needed to work remotely for an extended period of time. It is very important that your supervisor is aware of all equipment, materials, documents, etc. that are leaving the U-M premises. Supply your supervisor with a list of those items you are taking with you that under normal circumstances wouldn’t leave the building.
  • Campus is going to be asked to “ramp down research”. This means we should cease ordering and deliveries, and attempt to cancel deliveries of orders in progress. No equipment purchased from a grant or purchase order can be delivered to a non-University address. For purchases of supplies needed to do your work remotely using a Pcard, please talk to your supervisors.

If you are unable to work remotely, or can only work remotely part-time, you should:

  • Work with your supervisor to determine the most appropriate way to complete your timecard. Full-time staff are eligible for up to 80 hours of COVID-19 pay and part-time staff are eligible for a prorated amount based on effort.
  • Review instructions for completing your timecard correctly, available on the University Human Resources website at https://hr.umich.edu/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19

The situation with the COVID-19 virus is changing daily, and the College of Engineering is reacting as quickly as possible to work with University leadership, provide information and ensure the safety and well-being of our community. I strongly encourage you to stay informed. This includes checking both the University’s COVID-19 website, the College’s COVID-19 website, and reading all emails from leadership at U-M, the College and your respective department/unit. Be aware of the resources that are available, and be proactive in ensuring you are able to complete your duties, as we work together to stay well and do our part to “flatten the curve”.

Stay well,
Debbie Mero
